Biomechanics of the Feet and High Heels

The biomechanics of the feet change significantly when wearing high heels, shifting body weight forward, and increasing pressure on the forefoot, while limiting natural ankle motion. This altered alignment can strain muscles, tendons, and joints, leading to fatigue, pain, and imbalance during standing and walking. Risk factors include prolonged high heel wear, narrow toe boxes, elevated heel height, and existing foot structure concerns. Common foot conditions linked to high heels include bunions, hammertoes, and neuromas, in addition to plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendon tightness, stress fractures, and ankle instability. A podiatrist can evaluate gait, address pain, recommend supportive footwear, custom orthotics, and provide medical treatment to reduce damage. If you frequently wear high heels and have developed foot pain, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist who can treat various foot and ankle conditions, and guide you on what type of heels to wear.

Biomechanics in Podiatry

Podiatric biomechanics is a particular sector of specialty podiatry with licensed practitioners who are trained to diagnose and treat conditions affecting the foot, ankle and lower leg. Biomechanics deals with the forces that act against the body, causing an interference with the biological structures. It focuses on the movement of the ankle, the foot and the forces that interact with them.

A History of Biomechanics

  • Biomechanics dates back to the BC era in Egypt where evidence of professional foot care has been recorded.
  • In 1974, biomechanics gained a higher profile from the studies of Merton Root, who claimed that by changing or controlling the forces between the ankle and the foot, corrections or conditions could be implemented to gain strength and coordination in the area.

Modern technological improvements are based on past theories and therapeutic processes that provide a better understanding of podiatric concepts for biomechanics. Computers can provide accurate information about the forces and patterns of the feet and lower legs.

Understanding biomechanics of the feet can help improve and eliminate pain, stopping further stress to the foot.

Neutral Versus Stability Running Shoes

Neutral and stability running shoes are designed to support different foot types and running mechanics. Neutral running shoes provide even cushioning across the midsole and feature a flexible construction that allows the foot to move naturally, making them ideal for runners with a normal arch and minimal pronation. Stability running shoes, on the other hand, offer a firmer foam on the inner side of the midsole, structured sidewalls, and a broader base to improve balance and control overpronation. Choosing the correct shoe reduces injury risk and improves running efficiency. A podiatrist can evaluate your gait, recommend the most suitable shoe type, and provide custom orthotics, if necessary. If you have developed foot pain, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist who can treat various foot conditions, and guide you on the correct running shoes to wear.

For more information about walking shoes versus running shoes, consult with one of our podiatrists from Foot & Ankle Centers of Charlotte County . Our doctors can measure your feet to determine what your needs are and help you find an appropriate pair of footwear.

Foot Health: The Differences between Walking & Running Shoes

There are great ways to stay in shape: running and walking are two great exercises to a healthy lifestyle. It is important to know that running shoes and walking shoes are not interchangeable. There is a key difference on how the feet hit the ground when someone is running or walking. This is why one should be aware that a shoe is designed differently for each activity.

You may be asking yourself what the real differences are between walking and running shoes and the answers may shock you.

Differences

Walking doesn’t involve as much stress or impact on the feet as running does. However, this doesn’t mean that you should be any less prepared. When you’re walking, you land on your heels and have your foot roll forward. This rolling motion requires additional support to the feet.

Flexibility – Walking shoes are designed to have soft, flexible soles. This allows the walker to push off easily with each step.

When a Simple Nail Becomes a Painful Problem

Ingrown toenails occur when the edge of a nail grows into the surrounding skin instead of over it, most commonly affecting the big toe. The toe may look red, swollen, or shiny, and in more advanced cases there may be drainage, infection, or excess skin along the nail border. It often feels tender at first, then progresses to sharp pain, throbbing, warmth, and discomfort when walking or wearing shoes. Causes include improper nail trimming, tight or narrow footwear, toe injuries, and genetic factors. A podiatrist can help from the start by diagnosing the condition and determining whether infection or other complications are present. Initial treatment may include relieving pressure, reducing inflammation, and proper nail care. If necessary, care can then move to in-office procedures to remove the ingrown portion of the nail, along with education to prevent recurrence. Prompt care helps restore comfort and foot health. If you have a painful ingrown toenail, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist.

Ingrown toenails can become painful if they are not treated properly. For more information about ingrown toenails, contact one of our podiatrists of Foot & Ankle Centers of Charlotte County . Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Ingrown Toenails

Ingrown toenails occur when a toenail grows sideways into the bed of the nail, causing pain, swelling, and possibly infection.

Causes

  • Bacterial infections
  • Improper nail cutting such as cutting it too short or not straight across
  • Trauma to the toe, such as stubbing, which causes the nail to grow back irregularly
  • Ill-fitting shoes that bunch the toes too close together
  • Genetic predisposition

Prevention

Wearing proper fitting shoes and using proper cutting techniques will also help decrease your risk of developing ingrown toenails.

Treatment

Ingrown toenails are a very treatable foot condition. In minor cases, soaking the affected area in salt or antibacterial soaps will not only help with the ingrown nail itself, but also help prevent any infections from occurring. In more severe cases, surgery is an option. In either case, speaking to your podiatrist about this condition will help you get a better understanding of specific treatment options that are right for you.

Dealing With Intense Joint Pain

Gout is a common and acute form of inflammatory arthritis that often shows up first in the foot, especially the big toe. The toe may look red and shiny, and  feel warm, sometimes with tight skin that appears stretched. It often feels like sudden burning pain, throbbing, and extreme tenderness, even to light touch or sheets. Symptoms can arrive quickly and flare at night. Causes include high uric acid levels, kidney issues, and diets high in purines, such as red meat, shellfish, and alcohol. A podiatrist can help from the start by confirming the diagnosis through history, imaging, and laboratory testing when needed. Treatment may begin with pain relief, anti-inflammatory care and footwear advice. It may then move into long-term management, lifestyle education, and coordination with medical providers. Early care can reduce damage and recurrence. If you are dealing with painful gout, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist.

Gout is a painful condition that can be treated. If you are seeking treatment, contact one of our podiatrists from Foot & Ankle Centers of Charlotte County . Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Is Gout?

Gout is a form of arthritis that is characterized by sudden, severe attacks of pain, redness, and tenderness in the joints. The condition usually affects the joint at the base of the big toe. A gout attack can occur at any random time, such as the middle of the night while you are asleep.

Symptoms

  • Intense Joint Pain - Usually around the large joint of your big toe, and it most severe within the first four to twelve hours
  • Lingering Discomfort - Joint discomfort may last from a few days to a few weeks
  • Inflammation and Redness -Affected joints may become swollen, tender, warm and red
  • Limited Range of Motion - May experience a decrease in joint mobility

Risk Factors

  • Genetics - If family members have gout, you’re more likely to have it
  • Medications - Diuretic medications can raise uric acid levels
  • Gender/Age - Gout is more common in men until the age of 60. It is believed that estrogen protects women until that point
  • Diet - Eating red meat and shellfish increases your risk
  • Alcohol - Having more than two alcoholic drinks per day increases your risk
  • Obesity - Obese people are at a higher risk for gout

Prior to visiting your podiatrist to receive treatment for gout, there are a few things you should do beforehand. If you have gout you should write down your symptoms--including when they started and how often you experience them, important medical information you may have, and any questions you may have. Writing down these three things will help your podiatrist in assessing your specific situation so that he or she may provide the best route of treatment for you.
